December 2013 Trip Report
Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these Samaritans from the swift completion of ………. Ok, because we’re extremely safety oriented, pretty much all of that stuff (except the heat) will stop us. When it comes to flexibility though, we got it covered! Friday’s forecast tricked us into believing the weather in SW Arizona would improve faster than it did. Most passengers arrive at the respective airports Friday for a late morning departure, but the weather did not permit it. I heard of no reluctance to return early Saturday morning for another attempt and the morning brought good weather, a smooth ride, and the added bonus of a generous tail wind.
The Hotel Serenidad children had to wait an extra night for the appearance of Santa Alex, but there was much joy over the backpacks filled with toys that Bob and Linda Funk so generously assembled for Santa’s distribution. You can also guess the traditional piñata did not fare well when confronted by that many enthusiastic children. This year also brought a pleasant surprise in the form of an unexpected toy bonus. Our Midwestern University student chapter gathered additional toys for distribution to Lopez Mateos children.
Clinic included some extra moving parts because of staggered arrival times on Saturday morning, a few dental equipment challenges, and the short December day, but all who got a number were seen. For the second month in a row, we had an ASU student stationed at a table asking all patients to make a final stop before they left the clinic. This is part of our ASU student chapter’s program to capture an image of the patient’s chart and gather contact information. The goal is to provide a way for providers to retrieve information should the patient lose the paper chart and allow the charts to be analyzed to get a better understanding of what is being treating. The analysis may suggest the need for additional or different specialties, equipment, and medications. As always, for another perspective and a patient count please see Alicia’s blog http://samaritansmovil.blogspot.com/
The next clinic dates are January 17-19 and it’s planned as a double header, Lopez Mateos and LSI. Both clinics will tax dental, so dental providers, please give us your full consideration. We all look forward to two strong clinics to kick off the New Year!
Feliz Año Nuevo
